AUDITION ANNOUNCEMENT

The Dio - Dining & Entertainment, Livingston County's award-winning professional theatre company, is thrilled to announce auditions for their upcoming production of The Roommate by Jen Silverman, directed by Steve DeBruyne. Actors of color are especially encouraged to audition. Video submissions only, accepted through Monday, December 1. In-person callbacks will take place from 6pm to 11pm on Tuesday, December 9 at The Dio, 177 E. Main Street, Pinckney MI, 48169.

CASTING NON-EQUITY ACTORS FOR THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

SHARON – A strait-laced, lonely, divorced woman. Sharon owns the Iowa home where Robyn is renting a room. Seeking actor to play 50s to mid-60s.

ROBYN – A woman from The Bronx with a complicated past. Rough around the edges but trying to change. Seeking actor to play 50s to mid-60s.

                                                           VIDEO SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:
Prepare two contrasting monologues no more than one minute each. Please film at one from shoulders up, and at one full body. Email video link to steve@diotheatre.com with your name and "Roommate Submission" in the subject line. Unlisted YouTube links are preferred (make sure video is set to be viewed by anyone with the link). 

Please include the following in your submission email: your headshot and resume, as well as a list of all conflicts from January 12 through March 8. Video submissions will be accepted through Monday, December 1. In-person callbacks will take place from 6pm to 11pm on Tuesday, December 9 at The Dio, 177 E. Main Street, Pinckney MI, 48169.

                                                                             PAY: 
All adult actors receive a one-time stipend of $750 plus a meal following each performance and two complimentary tickets. Actors with previous serving experience may choose to serve tables on select nights for additional tip money. Servers are scheduled on an alphabetic rotation.

*If any of the performances are cancelled for any reason, stipend will be reduced by $40 per cancelled show. If performances are added, actors will be paid an additional $40 per added show. Meals are subject to availability, based on the needs of the audience at any given performance.

                                                                      REHEARSAL INFO:
Rehearsals will begin January 12, 2026, and take place at The Dio, 177 E. Main, Pinckney MI, 48169, Mondays through Fridays from 6pm to 10pm and Saturdays from noon to 6pm. Tech Saturday will take place from noon to midnight on January 31. Please be aware that rehearsal may run later than 10pm during tech week, February 2 through February 5. NOTE: If both actors cast have weekday availability for rehearsal, we are very interested in the possibility of moving some or all rehearsals to daytime. Please include weekday rehearsal availability with your submission video if you have any.

                                                                      SHOW SYNOPSIS:
Sharon, in her mid-fifties, is recently divorced and needs a roommate to share her Iowa home. Robyn, also in her mid-fifties, needs a place to hide and a chance to start over. But as Sharon begins to uncover Robyn’s secrets, they encourage her own deep-seated desire to transform her life completely. A dark comedy about what it takes to re-route your life – and what happens when the wheels come off.

Actors of color are especially encouraged to audition. Video submissions only, accepted through Monday, December 1. In-person callbacks will take place from 6pm to 11pm on Monday, December 8 at The Dio, 177 E. Main Street, Pinckney MI, 48169.

 

CASTING NON-EQUITY SINGER/MOVER/ACTORS FOR THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

NOTE: All roles below may double as ensemble in certain moments of the show, taking on multiple smaller, featured roles such as Dr. Bennett, The Mayor, The Mermaid, Fisherman, Circus Performers, and other various characters in Edward's stories.

The role of Edward Bloom is cast.

SANDRA BLOOM – Actor to play a woman in her mid 40s/early 50s as well as younger versions of herself. Soprano with mix/belt, vocal range: G3-E5. Edward’s wife. Patient, calm, the perfect balance to Edward’s enthusiasm. She adores and appreciates Edward and tries to bring reconciliation to her husband and son, both of whom she loves.

WILL BLOOM – Actor to play a man in his 20s. Tenor with pop belt, vocal range: C#3-G4. Edward and Sandra’s son, new husband to Josephine and expectant father. An earnest, serious, thoughtful young man. Analytical, “realist”, dry-humored. Disbelieving his father’s stories, he seeks to find the truth in his father’s past.

YOUNG WILL – Child actor to play an 8-to-12-year-old boy. Alto, vocal range: B3-C5. Edward’s son, precocious and intelligent. Intrigued by his father’s stories but already starting to doubt their truth. This role may be double cast.

JOSEPHINE BLOOM – Actor to play a woman in her 20s. Mezzo with strong mix and belt, vocal range: G3-C#5. Will’s wife. Successful, intelligent, kind and understanding, new bride and expectant mother. Josephine acts as the bridge between Edward and Will, explaining the deeper meaning of the stories.

THE WITCH – Actor to play adult woman. Mezzo with strong belt, vocal range: F3-F5. Commanding performer with great confidence and storytelling ability. Mysterious and knowledgeable. Convinces Edward to pursue a big life without fear.

KARL, THE GIANT – Actor to play man in his late 20s/30s. Bass, vocal range: A3-D4. Edward’s best friend. Karl is shy, exceptionally intelligent, hermit-like, and has a quiet charisma. He needs a booming voice and large personality. Seeking tall actors and/or actors willing to perform on stilts.

AMOS CALLOWAY/DR. BENNETT – Actor to play adult man, age 35+. Baritone, vocal range: C3-G5. Amos is the rather eccentric, quirky owner of the circus that employs young Edward. He also happens to be a werewolf.

JENNY HILL – Adult actor to play woman from early 20s to mid 40s. Mezzo with strong mix and belt, vocal range: G3 to E5. Edward’s first love and devoted girlfriend. She is beautiful, a dreamer, maybe a little naive. As an adult, she becomes disillusioned, but dignified.

DON PRICE – Adult actor to play a man from early 20s to mid 40s. Baritone, vocal range: C3-F#4. A bully who is no fan of Edward. Sandra’s first fiancé.

ZACKY PRICE – Adult actor to play a man from early 20s to mid 40s. Tenor, vocal range A3-Ab4. Nerdy brother and shadow of Don Price.

                                                          VIDEO SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:
Prepare two contrasting musical theatre songs no more than one minute each. Songs from the show are okay. Please film one from shoulders up, and one full body. Child actors may choose to perform two contrasting songs or one song and tell one joke that shows off personality (no knock-knock jokes please). Email video link to steve@diotheatre.com with your name and "Big Fish Submission" in the subject line. Unlisted YouTube links are preferred (make sure video is set to be viewed by anyone with the link).

But their son, Will, about to become a father himself, is determined to uncover the truth behind his father’s epic tales. As Will embarks on a journey to understand the man behind the myth, Big Fish explores the power of storytelling, family bonds, and the search for identity.

With its soaring score, unforgettable characters, and a blend of humor and heartfelt emotion, Big Fish offers an extraordinary theatrical experience that celebrates the joy of life, the importance of family, and the beauty of the stories we tell.
